The Police Service Commission has approved the promotion of 6,618 senior police officers across the country.

The promotions was one of the highpoints of the 8th Plenary Meeting of the Commission which spanned a period of three weeks.

The meeting which was chaired by the chairman of the Commission, former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Musiliu Smith (rtd), according to the commission, ended on Wednesday.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Commission’s, Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, dated Friday, July 3rd 2020.

The statement said that one Assistant Inspector General of Police, Olushola Oyebade currently at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Jos, Plateau State was promoted to the next rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), to represent the South West geopolitical zone.

Ani said that four Commissioners of Police (CP), including one specialist, were promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

He said that the CPs who were promoted to AIG are, CP Aisha L. Abubakar, CP. Veterinary Department; CP. Asuquo A. A. Amba, former CP, Bayelsa State Command; Counter Terrorism and currently CP. Ekiti state Command; CP. Nekereuwem A. Akpan, former CP. Cross Rivers State Command and Olafihan Adeniran Adeeoye, currently CP. Anti Terrorism.

The Head of the Commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations said that the Commission also approved the promotion of three Deputy Commissioners of Police to the next rank of substantive Commissioners of Police.

“They are DCP Jonathan Towuru, Deputy Force Secretary; DCP Abiodun Alabi, National Defence College and DCP. Akande Kayode of the State House (Presidential Villa).

“Three Assistant Commissioners of Police; ACP. Adenola J. Oluwole, ACP. Valentine Olumese and ACP. Isa Jibril Grema were promoted to the next rank of Deputy Commissioners of Police.

“Eight Superintendents of Police including Omoruyi Godwin, Clifford Okwor presently of Anambra State Command and Uchendu Fransica Ngozi, Staff Officer Senior, SOS, also of Anambra State Command were also promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent of Police.

607 Deputy Superintendents of Police were also elevated to the rank of Superintendents of Police.

They include; DSP. Markus Goyom, Ifeoma Chukwu Ozuruigbo, Elizabeth Olajimoke Olatunbosun, Mina Mosese Anderson, Delta State Command and Mohammed Yakubu Ibrahim, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) 9th Mile, Enugu State Command.

Others are Frank Omokhoje Longe, Delta State Command, Chukwudi Nwanze Simon, Ukadike Oyekachukwu Martins, Jemimah Okafor; Emeka Iheanacho, PPRO Zone 5 and Ede John Chukwuemeka.

“The Commission also promoted 206 Assistant Superintendents of Police to Deputy Superintendents among which were; Ignatius Ogoejbunam Atta, Mustapha Ali and Awe Vincent

“It also promoted 5,786 Inspectors to Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP11.) Some of the new ASPs are Egbo Rosemary Obianujunwa, Operations, Delta State Command; Abdulahi Mohammed; Elvina Chukwu, Oyo State Command; Balogun Olushegun; Amaka Onwude, CPS, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State Command; Samuel Agu, Delta Command; Joseph Seyinko and Chinyere Mabeokwu of Enugu Area Command” he said.

A former member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Olusegun Olulade, has been conferred with the prestigious lifetime fellowship recognition award by the Chartered Institute of Public Resources and Politics (CIPRMP) based in Ghana.

At the presentation ceremony in Lagos on Thursday evening, Olulade, who represented Epe Constituency 2 at the Lagos Assembly between 2011 and 2019, was also formally inducted into the 2020 Fellowship Hall of Fame of the Institute.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony, Dr. Richards Kpoku Aquate, Executive Director of the Institute, disclosed that CIPRMP carried out over a two-year intensive research on the former lawmaker’s profile with regards to public service and development.

“We are indeed very proud of your unassailable statesmanship pedigree, your vast managerial acumen and shrewd administrative capabilities which made you at various times to be saddled with very prominent statesmanship responsibilities as Chairman, House Committee on Healthcare Services and later on Chairman, House Committee on Information, Security and Strategy.

“Indeed, you didn’t disappoint the trust and confidence of the Lagos House of Assembly and the State Government because your performance delivery scorecard was amazing and socio-economically productive with enviable laurels,” Aquate said.

He further stressed that, “This institute is not also oblivious of your exemplary landmark accomplishments as a distinguished legislative personality who has traversed the corporate, socio-economic and public service landscape of Nigeria and the diaspora.

You have indeed demonstrated rare and incorruptible track records of patriotism in all your statesmanship services, you have overtime proven yourself as an erudite parliamentarian that is committed to improving the lot of the Nigeria Citizenry.

“This institute also wants to commend your tireless humanitarian services over the years to the indigent and also supporting academic pursuits of Nigeria youths through your empowerment initiative called The EleniyanCares Foundation.

In his response, Olulade thanked the Institute for the honour, also promising to continue in all he has been doing, which prompted the Institute to bestow the honour on him.

It would be recalled that the Institute, on Monday, honoured the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu with the same award and also inducted him into its Hall of Fame.

 

Air France management has revealed plans to lay-off 7,580 jobs at the airline and its regional unit by the end of 2022.

The airline firm cited the debilitating effect of the coronavirus pandemic. 

It made this known through a statement issued after meetings between managers and staff representatives.

It stated that the carrier wants to get rid of 6,560 positions of the 41,000 at Air France, and 1,020 positions of the 2,420.

Two persons have been confirmed dead and two others missing after a 14-passenger boat capsized in Lagos.

Nigerian Traviation gathered that the boat which left Ebute-Ero for Ikorodu around 8pm, upturned shortly after it took off, throwing all passengers into the water on Friday night.

Sources said 10 of the passengers were rescued from the water hours after while the captain and another passenger where yet to be found.

Confirming the incident, Director General (DG) Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu told The Nation at about 11:15pm that search and rescue operations were ongoing.

He said the night boat ride was in violation of restrictions on nocturnal water travels in the state.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the rescue of those found was done under extremely challenging nightfall conditions.

“We have rescued 10 persons alive and recovered two bodies. Two others including the captain are still missing. Search and rescue operations commenced  under extremely challenging nightfall conditions,” he said.

A popular musician, Oladapo Oyebanjo aka D’Banj has dragged his accuser, Seyitan Babatayo, before an FCT High Court demanding N1bn for general damages and N500m for aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages.

Babatayo had accused D’Banj of raping her in Glee Hotel, Lagos, sometime in December 2018, an allegation the musician has denied.

In the suit filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), the musician sought an order barring Babatayo from making further accusations against his person.

Some of the reliefs sought include: “An order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendant whether by herself, her agents, servants, employees, privies, assigns, friends or personal representatives or otherwise howsoever from further publishing, tweeting or posting to members of the public, on their Twitter handle or any social media outlets or print or electronic medium and from further tweeting or publishing the said offensive words complained of, or similar words or words to the like effect.

An order directive the defendant to pay to the claimant the sum of N1bn only representing general damages over the untold embarrassment, derision, public ridicule, odium, obloquy, marital disharmony, mental agony and psychological trauma which the defendant’s tweets and publications have caused the claimant.

“An order directing the defendant to pay to the claimant the sum of N500m representing aggravated, punitive and exemplary damages.”

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had last month ordered an investigation into the allegations levelled against D’Banj by Miss Babatayo.

The Lagos state Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has warned security agents not to harass motorists without face masks in the state.

Sanwo-Olu said that motorists have less chances of contracting the virus since they are in the car. 

The Governor made this known during the live press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Lagos.

“Our family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ambassador Vincent Sunny Okobi, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, June 27, 2020 after a long illness.
 
Ambassador Okobi was the quintessential gentleman and a diplomat who has left an indelible mark on the world stage. First as a clerk under then Governor-General of Nigeria Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, before leaving Nigeria for the United States. Then as a civil rights activist and President of the African Students’ Union in Washington, D.C. in the 1960s. While serving as Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, he was awarded France’s Légion d’honneur by President Francois Mitterrand for his commitment to promoting Franco-Nigerian foreign relations.
 
Most of all though, Ambassador Okobi has left his most unforgettable legacy as a devoted husband of 52 years, father of four children and grandfather of 14.

Ondo state Health Commissioner, Dr Wahab Adegbenro is dead.

According to Reports from government quarters said he died of COVID-19.

Wahab Oluropo Adegbenro was born on 5th June 1955 at Ilara-mokin in Ifedore Local Government Area of Ondo State.

After his elementary education at Muslim Primary School, Ilara-mokin. Between 1962 and 1967, Wahab attended Oyemekun Grammar NSchool, Akure; and the University of Benin, Benin City. He holds the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (M.B; B.S).

He was a member of the Nigeria Medical Association; member of the Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria; Associate member, Royal College of General Practitioners of London; and member of Nigeria Guild of Medical Directors.

He established Crown Hospital, Akure where he was the Chief Medical Director.

Wahab was appointed the Vice Chairman, Ondo State Committee on Sports for the Disabled from 1997 to 1999; and later  chairman of the Committee from 1999 to 2002.  He was a Director, Ondo State Waste Management Board from 1999 to 2002 before he was appointed a Commissioner in Ondo State and was in charge of Culture and Tourism and later the Ministry of Health.
