JUNE 14TH: WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY

There is no doubt that blood donors are lifesavers; this is the reason the World Health Organization (WHO) chose to celebrate voluntary and unpaid blood donors all over the world every 14th of June for their selflessness and efforts to keep other people’s lives.

World Blood Donor Day seeks to create awareness about the need for regular blood donations because this donated blood and blood products help to give individuals and even communities, access to affordable and quality blood supplies whenever the need arises.

It is amazing to note that quite a number of people are still donating blood even during this period of the outbreak of the covid19 pandemic. The theme for this year’s celebration of World Blood Donor Day is “Safe blood saves lives” with the slogan “Give blood and make the world a healthier place”. This is to encourage more people all over the world to donate blood so that more lives can be saved.

Peace and Conflict Resolution Resource Centre (PEACrEc) celebrates all blood donors on this day for giving to save other people’s lives. We use this opportunity to join the WHO campaign to request that more people become Life Savers by donating blood because the peace we seek can be attainable when there are more Life Savers than Life takers.

Until the coast is clear, my church will not be opened- Bakare

The serving overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, formerly known as Latter Rain Assembly,Tunde Bakare has said that’s the church he pastors will not be opened “until the coast is clear”.

Speaking at the second edition of the virtual 3Gz — Guys, Girls and God — session of the CGCC Legacy Youth Fellowship, Bakare said “government cannot shut the church, it can only shut a building,” stating that the church is marching on.

Bakare said he was in a virtual meeting with Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos and his team, where it was predicted that August would likely record lots of coronavirus cases in Lagos and Nigeria.

The pastor said the church is not about tithe and offerings but about edifying the people and fixing the challenges of the world.

According to him, he is in no rush to reopen a building, when services can be done virtually and more people can be reached with the “word of truth”.

Citing Genesis Chapter 8, Bakare said “Noah was on a lockdown for 150 days”, after which he sent out a raven to check if the water on the earth had receded.

Bakare added that “Noah was not trying to prove his anointing by coming out to swim in the flood” before the water had dried up, stating that Noah waited another 40 days after the 150 days before setting out.

He said that those who want to be the raven sent out to check the water can go out and check, but he is not ready to put the life of his people at risk to prove anything.

The 65-year-old gave an example of a choir in the United States which met for rehearsals and recorded transmission of the novel coronavirus disease among over 40 of its members and recorded some deaths after that meeting.

When asked when the church will reopen, he said with the projections by the government on when the disease would subside, he was looking at September or the end of the year.

“We are not opening till the coast is clear,” he said.

Bakare and the CGCC had given up their church halls as isolation centres to the Lagos and Ogun state governments in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

NCAA warns aviation stakeholders Of weather conditions

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has urged pilots and airline operators to be wary of bad weather and attendant thunderstorms.

This warning issued to all on Thursday was because of the outset of the rainy season and the need to exercise “extreme caution during flight operations”.

The rainy season, which is torrential, is prevalent in the Southern and Northern parts of Nigeria. It is usually accompanied by severe thunderstorms, which could impact the safety of flight operations.

There are many other hazardous weather occurrences such as severe turbulence, microburst or low level wind-shear and occasionally hail events are bound to affect air navigation.

The apex regulatory authority, therefore, directs all pilots to recourse to utmost restraint whenever adverse weather is observed or forecast by Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

General Manager, Public Relations of the NCAA, Sam Adurogboye, said pilots and flight crews shall mandatorily obtain adequate, en route and destination weather information and briefing from NIMET Aerodrome Meteorological offices before flight operations.

“In the same vein, Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) and Flight Crews/Operators shall ensure total compliance with all aerodromes operating minima.

“It is quite important for all intending air travellers and airline operators to note that in line with Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs) Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) may temporarily close airspace during inclement weather conditions.

“These are adverse weather conditions such as severe thunderstorms, squall lines microburst or low level wind-shear as observed or forecast by NIMET,” he said.

Recall that a similar weather alert was issued by the authority in March at the advent of the rainy season. It was circulated to the entire industry stating ahead of time what to expect and recommended precautionary measures.

The NCAA expects strict adherence to this directive to ensure the safety of air transportation in Nigeria.
